Green List companies this year employed between 50 and 85,000 staff and represented industries as diverse as media, construction, telecoms and power generation. As different as they seem, these firms are united by their commitment to reducing their impact on the environment. They are proof that exciting, innovative and often simple methods give big results.

London based media and communictaions agency, Forster, beat a host of other companies, big and small with varying environmental impacts, to win the title at the awards ceremony held in London’s Covent Garden on 20 May 2009. The implementation of initiatives including additional holiday for those travelling to work on foot or by bicycle, and thinking local first for all suppliers, were just some of the policies that helped them on their way to being crowned Britain's greenest business for 2009. Media giant The National Magazine Company finished in second place overall, with construction company Willmott Dixon third.

Don’t be put off if your company has a high carbon footprint or if its line of business means that energy consumption is unavoidably high. It is commitment to change and evidence of a genuine desire to become more environmentally friendly which will earn a company a place on the Green List.
